Donald Foord lives within view of Big Ben and walking distance of Westminster Cathedral in a stuccoed, end-of-terrace house in a London Square. He’s been a Host for 12 years; his wife Lindy is a full-time teacher. “It was Lindy who suggested I became a Host after I retired. I’d finished a degree in history and am in the middle of doing a Masters in historical cities. I think she felt I might become too much of a recluse if I did nothing but study. “I prefer guests who stay for a minimum of four nights as, because I’m interested in London, I don’t think staying for any less time gives you a chance to get to know the city. “Sometimes, if guests ask, I’ll give them suggestions on where to go to see tucked-away historical and architectural sights. I’ve accompanied some on local walks along the River Thames. “A sense of humour helps at times and, putting aside financial considerations, I get a lot of satisfaction giving our guests an enjoyable stay.” |
