TRAVEL TELEGRAPH, May 2005
These days, the best British b&bs often offer not only great value for money but also superb quality and service. One I stayed in when researching this article provided me with a bedroom that would have graced a luxury hotel, a breakfast that a trained chef would have been proud of and a more enthusiastic welcome than I’ve had from any relative recently – and all for just £45.
So how do you go about finding such places?
ALTERNATIVES TO SLEEP ON
At Home in London is one of several agencies specialising in arranging b&b in private homes in London. It has some 80 inspected homes on its books, mostly in smart parts of central and west London. The owners are often professional types. You are given your own key and in most cases you have an en-suite or private bathroom. The website has multiple photographs and lots of detail on many of the properties, including the exact size of the beds. Nightly rates: £29-74 for a single, £57-92 for a double. There is a minimum stay of two nights.
